Given the long infancy of human children, is marriage part of God's design for their education and protection?

Is there any reason to believe that primitive man did not observe permanent mating of husbands and wives? Permanent mating solves the problem of coping with the protracted infancy of human children compared to all other species. In contrast, honoring non-mating relationships as marriage would not solve the problem of raising human children. We know marriage is honored in cultures virtually untouched by Christianity, and even under atheist governments, which rules it out as a religious imposition on human nature.
